Indicator Phrasing

English: % of girls and women stating that they feel safe when accessing water

What is its purpose?

Gender-based violence is one of the factors decreasing women’s (and households’ in general) access to water. The indicator therefore assesses the proportion of women and girls who feel safe when going to collect water.

How to Collect and Analyse the Required Data

*This a Global Results Framework indicator.

Result Statement:  Increased % of girls and women that feel safe when accessing sanitation services

Collect the following data by conducting individual interviews with a representative sample of girls and women:

RECOMMENDED SURVEY QUESTIONS (Q) AND POSSIBLE ANSWERS (A)

Q1:  When you go to collect water, to what extent do you feel safe from any types of violence? Would you say that you feel very safe, quite safe or that you do not feel safe?

A1:

1) feels very safe

2) feels quite safe

3) does not feel safe

4) don’t know / no response

Calculate the indicator’s value by dividing the number of respondents who respond “very safe” or "quite safe" by the total number of respondents (exclude those who do not know or do not respond) and multiplying the result by 100.

Disaggregate by

Disaggregate the data by age groups (girls / adult women) and geographical location.

Important Comments

1) Consider adding further questions assessing details about why, when, and where some respondents do not feel safe.
